Fort Bulnes Visitor Centre
Fort Bulnes is a reconstruction of an historic Chilean fort built in 1843 on a rocky hill overlooking the Straight of Magellan to ward off claims by other nations and to protect the straight. The harsh weather meant that the fort was abandoned and destroyed when Punta Arenas was established.
The fort has been rebuilt as an historic monument and is supported by a visitor centre that overlooks Purto del Hambre with its distinctive peninsulas.
The visitor's centre provides good view of the local coast and the Strait or Magellan. It also provides a rather nice history of the area and why it was important. There is also café where you can have a hot drink and something to eat.
