Ahu Tongariki is the largest ahu on Easter Island. The moai were toppled during the island's civil wars and in the 20th century the ahu was swept inland by a tsunami. The restored site has fifteen (15) moai. The largest moai ever erected on the island is there and it weights about 86 tonnes.
All of the moai at this site face sunset at the Summer Solstice, The ahu was subject to restoration work in the 1990s by a team of archaeologists in a five year project involving the Chilean Government, a Japanese crane company and the University of Chile.
